Confederate General Stonewall Jackson’s last words were, “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.”

Charles Hawks, 78, has crossed over that river and is now resting under the shade of those trees. He passed away quietly on Friday, March 5th, with his loving daughter at his bedside.

Charles grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School (1961) and High Point College (1965), and was employed by the NC Department of Revenue for 33 years. He proudly served in the NC National Guard, and in the US Naval Reserve for 23 years. He was an Intelligence Officer and retired as a Commander.

While living in Raleigh, he helped organize and lead the Raleigh Civil War Round Table. He served as NC Division Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and served on the National Executive Committee while severing as the Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. He also was a leader in the NC Order of Military Stars & Bars.
After moving to Burlington to be near his beloved grandchildren, he helped revitalize the Burlington Bird Club and served as its president. He helped organize, and served as president, of Company Shops Railroad Club and the Front Street UMC Travelers.
He served as president and treasurer of the Burlington Royals Booster Club, and was a leader in the Chapman Historical Society and the No Boat Yacht Club. He greatly enjoyed traveling to see lighthouses and photographed over 100 lighthouses and workboats. He loved visiting the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, the Outer Banks, and Cajun country in Louisiana, and especially the weeks he spent at Atlantic Beach while his grandchildren were young. But his greatest enjoyment was watching his grandchildren grow up.

He volunteered at Allied Churches of Alamance County and Alamance County Meals on Wheels. Memorials may be sent to either of them, to Front Street United Methodist Church, or to the charity of your choice.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hawks Newsome (and husband, Mark) of Burlington; his three grandchildren, Veronica, Cecilia, and Becket Newsome; and his special lady friend of more than twenty five years, Lu Ann Hall of Matthews, NC; all of whom he loved dearly.

The family would like to thank Serenity at ARMC and Nina at Moses Cone, both exceptional nurses who took the best care of Charles these past few months. Theywould also like to thank the wonderful staff at Hospice Home, especially Dan, Tina, Carla, and Carah.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 8, 3:00-5:00pm, at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home, 306 Glenwood Ave, Burlington. Funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9 at 11:00am at Rich and Thompson, followed by graveside services at Warrendale Cemetery, Old Warrenton Road, Norlina, at 3:00pm.
