If it had not been for band, I would have dropped out.
I went to college at North Texas, graduated in 1966 and moved to Los Angeles. While there I toured and did record albums with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends and the Beach Boys.
I started teaching in Hollywood in the early 70's at the Sherman School of music and Arts. I got a Masters degree in music performance from California State University, Northridge in 1977 and move back to Raleigh in 1978.
I sterted teaching at Atlantic Christian College in 1978, Met my wife in a big band rehersal in Pensacola, Fla in 1980, Got married on Jan 3 1981.
In 1985 we moved to New Orleans and have been here since. While here we have performed with the music legends of New Orleans, recorded with some and now have our own group Mayes2 with the two of us.
I started teaching at Xavier University of La in 1987 and also teach at Loyola University of New Orleans and for a short while at Delgado
Community College. Now I just teach Jazz History at Loyola and perform with our group Mayes 2.
