Jane Stuart

Jane Katherine Stuart died on March 1, 2022.

A native of Raleigh, Jane was born on February 22, 1943 to the late Archie David Stuart and Katherine Bennett Stuart. She was predeceased by her brother, John C. Stuart and her nephew Dr. William (Bill) Stuart. She is survived by her brother, A. D. Stuart, Jr (Callie), her cherished companion, Charles Terrell, her nephew, John “Mike” Stuart, Jr. (Rachel Foster), and nieces Katie Power (Andy) and Ellen Gaddy (Will). She was devoted to her great nieces and nephews: Keane Stuart and Colin Godwin and their mother, Amy Stuart, Beatrix Gaddy, Conrad and Drew Power, and Erin Stuart. Jane remembered every birthday and holiday, and showered those close to her with gifts and love. She was there for the important events and occasions in the lives of her loved ones. Jane also leaves behind many beloved cousins and countless friends.

Jane was a 1961 graduate of Broughton High School. She earned a degree in Home Economics Education from the University of Georgia in 1965 and a Masters in Education from N. C. State University. She began a career with the Cooperative Extension Service with N. C. State University in Stokes County. In 1968 she moved to Reidsville in Rockingham County, where she had responsibilities in Home Economics and 4-H Youth Programs. She supervised low-income nutrition programs, which included providing educational programs in health, nutrition, food safety and food preservation. She also organized and trained leaders to serve the 4-H community clubs and organized special programs for young people designed to promote their growth and development into productive adult citizens in their communities.

In 1979, Jane was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of 4-H Agents, and in 1981, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Extension Home Economists. She was a life member of the Women of the Church of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Woman’s Club of Reidsville (president in 1976) and in Raleigh. She also was an active member of the Board of Directors of the N.C. State University Club.

Jane had many interests. She was an enthusiastic Wolfpack fan until her death. She caught “the travel bug” when she traveled to Peru during the summers of 1963 and 1964. Her father had taken an assignment with N. C. State University and the Agriculture University in Lima, Peru. Later, she traveled to countries in Africa and Europe, as well as to most of the states in the USA. She loved the beach and spent many summer vacations there. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed crewel embroidery and pillow making. She loved meeting new people and had many, many friends.

A Memorial Service celebrating Jane’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 9th at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, 27 Horne Street in Raleigh, followed by a reception at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Longwood University Foundation, Bill Stuart Memorial Scholarship, 201 High Street, Farmville, VA. 23909; West Raleigh Presbyterian Church; 4-H Program, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (give.ncsu.edu); or to the charity of one’s choice.

Ann Bennett (Rogers)

Jane was my first cousin, and we grew up together.  She was born in Raleigh and her family moved to Laurinburg for a few years, but moved back when we were in the sixth grade. She was with our class through Daniels and Broughton.

Jane was a driving force for many of our class reunions and our “Broughton Gal” luncheons. She was proud of her Broughton heritage and treasured the friendships she made with members of our class. We must continue these connections in her honor. She will be missed.
