Robert Hopkins

  Robert Patton Hopkins died Monday, May 25, 2009. Born June 16, 1943, he was the son of the late Lindsey Brown Hopkins and Evelyn Rose Hopkins of Raleigh. He graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1961. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1966 and a Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering from NCSU in 1967. After working eighteen months for Bechtel Corporation in Gaithersburg, Maryland, he returned to Raleigh and joined Robert E. Lasater to form Lasater-Hopkins Engineers. Later the business became Lasater-Hopkins-Chang Engineers. Mr. Hopkins was respected by architects, engineers, and contractors for his professionalism, innovations, dependability, integrity, and his desire for perfection. Some of his accomplishments were the structural design of the North Carolina Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of History, One and Two Hanover, numerous buildings on the campuses of UNC Chapel Hill, NCSU, East Carolina University, the North Carolina Aquariums at Fort Fisher, Manteo and Pine Knoll Shores, parts of Wake Medical Center and other hospitals, many of the Wake County Public Schools and the expansions of both Carter-Finley and Kenan Stadiums. Mr. Hopkins was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh. He was a member of the American Concrete Institute and the Consulting Engineers Council, served on the board and was chairman of the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, and served on the Board of Governors for MacGregor Downs Country Club. Mr. Hopkins is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Ann Britt Hopkins; daughter Lindsey Hopkins Rose and her husband Patrick Joseph Rose of Cary; son Robert Britt Hopkins and his wife Lindsay Stinson Hopkins of Cary; grandchildren Langston Cooper Hopkins and Mary Reeves Hopkins of Cary; brother John Kirby Hopkins of Raleigh. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Morgan and Salisbury Streets in Raleigh, on Thursday, May 28 at 11:00 am. Visitation with the family will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Maynard Road in Cary Wednesday evening, May 27 from 6:00 to 8:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Robert P. i remember bob as the first of our class to wear braces at daniels; i saw him many years later at the scene of a fatal accident at his construction site at hanover square in downtown raleigh; i learned then of his civil engineering degree from state and his work;
