Bob was the nicest guy you'd want to meet. I know that's a cliche, but I think being his roommate for three years at Carolina kept me out of trouble. He dated Carolyn Cole during those three years and married her during the summer after our junior year.

During those years we roomed together, Bob would spend hours on an accounting project. He was that kind of guy, always conscientious and thorough. He was the ant; I was the grasshopper.

As if to illustrate the kind of mischief Bob prevented, at the end of our junior year, Norwood Taylor and I found a photograph of a model supposedly named Karen Kool from a men's magazine. The model's pseudonym was so close to Carolyn Cole we couldn't resist: We slipped the magazine page into Bob's yearbook.

Bob never said a word. He was like that; he'd take life in stride without sweating the small things.

Bob and Carolyn had a great son, Greg, who also received his degree in planning at Carolina. After living in Charlotte for a number of years, Bob and Carolyn moved to Cary. The veretable gallery of pictures of Greg showed how much they loved their son.

One snowy day Bob and Greg, my son Erich and I headed off to Chapel Hill for a Carolina game. When I suggested I drive, I knew he wasn't well. It was not long after that he passed away with cancer.

But I will always have great memories of Bob. RIP, buddy.
