Beyond question or doubt, whenever I glance back into the late fifties and early sixties and my years at Broughton, one individual immediately  comes to mind, "Twinkie" Short !   Surely one of the most gifted students ever to grace the hallways of Broughton, Twinkie had it all,  Beauty, Brains, Wit, Artistic Talent and Spunk.

You may remember that her knowledge of world history was so profound that Mr. Clark insisted that she lecture all of his classes on the history of Russia and the Russian Revolution.  It was this event that I first witnessed her brilliance. She, as an ardent democrat and I,  serving as president of the Teeenage Republican Club, delighted in friendly debates.   As a gifted artist she had no need to comform  to the unwritten dress code of her contemporaries, nor to adher to their friviolity. Living directly across the street from the Governor's Mansion in a house later to become the Lt. Governor's Mansion, Twinkie delighted in entertaining the governor's children on week ends who would drop by to play games in the huge attic of her house. My grandparents also lived close by on East Lane Street. Hugh Morson Jr. High was only three blocks away and thus this now historic districe was our humble neighborhood. As the decades passed I was fortunate in locating  Twinkie and her beloved husband Roy at their home in Richmond Va. Twinkie always played down her achievments in high school by concentrating on her delightful role as Wife and Mother.  Their fifty-eight year marriage was straight out of a romance novel.  It was in our last telephone coversation, two years prior to her passing, that she  expressed her deep remorse over Roy's declining health. Their committment had grown so deep and abiding.

Surely, Twinkie would have excelled in any pathway she might have chosen to take after we all left high school.  Fortunately, She chose to take the High Road and follow God's Plan for her life. For this we can all  be thankful that "In our Father's House there are many mansions and Christ is preparing a place for us that where He is, there we shall be also."
